How to Tell When It's Time for Professional Cleaning

Your dryer vent gives warning signs before it becomes a serious problem. Here are the seven most common indicators that your dryer vent needs professional cleaning.

    1. Clothes take two or more cycles to dry. This is the most common sign. When airflow is restricted, moist air can't escape efficiently, so clothes stay damp through a full cycle.
  • โœ“
    2. The dryer feels hot to the touch. Excessive heat on the dryer's exterior means hot air is backing up instead of venting outside. This is both an efficiency problem and a fire risk.
  • โœ“
    3. Burning smell during operation. A burning odor, especially a lint-like smell, indicates lint is overheating inside the vent or dryer. Turn off the dryer and schedule cleaning promptly.
  • โœ“
    4. Lint visible around the dryer. Lint accumulating on the floor behind the dryer, on top of the machine, or on clothes after drying suggests the vent isn't capturing and exhausting properly.
  • โœ“
    5. Exterior vent flap doesn't open. During dryer operation, go outside and check the vent hood. The damper flap should open with airflow. If it stays closed or barely moves, there's a blockage.
  • โœ“
    6. Drying times gradually increasing. If you've noticed over months that loads take longer than they used to, lint is likely accumulating progressively in the vent.
  • โœ“
    7. It's been over two years. Even without obvious symptoms, the U.S. Fire Administration recommends regular cleaning. If it's been more than two years since professional service, schedule an inspection.
